Who are you as a person?

My name is Ida-Sofia, but I just go by Ida (pronounced eee-duh) :) I was born in Finland and my family immigrated to the United States when I was three! We went back and forth a little, moving back to Finland when I was 7 and then back again a few years later, but I mostly grew up in Michigan. I’m definitely not a morning person (lol) and one of my favorite things about owning my own business is making my own schedule and working on a timeline that works best for me and my lifestyle! I love all things artsy: I write poetry, paint skateboards, love reading, and all sorts of crafts! My favorite alcoholic drink is one called an Eastern Standard at the Soho house, it’s basically vodka (or gin) with lime, cucumber and mint. My favorite non-alcoholic drink recently has been Poppi soda’s! I also love kombucha.

Why did you start your business?

I started Evil Queen when I realized there was a gap in the market — I had the idea to make funny candles one day when I was at work at my receptionist job at a fitness studio. I worked near a bath and body works at the time and so I was thinking about candles pretty frequently. There was a flower shop nearby that was called “basic flowers” and I thought, what an awful but funny name for a flower shop! That’s kind of where the funny candle idea originated. I thought, surely, funny candles existed already. But after some thorough research, I couldn’t find anything like what I was intending to create! I had to teach myself how to make candles but I knew it was a good idea and I’m glad I stuck with it and didn’t wait for someone else to start making those candles.

If you want other women in biz to know one thing, what would it be?

Never ever think you can’t do something just because you’re a woman and the business world is sometimes geared toward men. I have had plenty of sexist experiences while owning my business (a man once wouldn’t rent a warehouse space to me because this was “only my first successful business”). You are creative, and wonderful, and have unique ideas that the world needs! Don’t ever doubt yourself or think you’re “too emotional” or too anything! You’re just right.

What results stick out to you the most about Pinterest’s take on “Ida Aesthetic?”

It’s a lot of fairies, cottage core images (which is funny, I consider myself more on the dark / emo side personally!) but I do love a good garden or plants (I am a taurus after all!).
