A Conversation on Cost and Value

As designers and creatives, it can feel scary to charge what some people would consider a “steep” price.

However, the cost ends up becoming a fraction of the value designers and creatives provide through their service.

A simple way to think of it would be these examples:

  • You hire a muralist to create a custom wall design in your store that customers can take photos by, in doing so your brand reaches more people that keep your doors open for business all day to buy your products and take photos at that wall. While you might have paid the muralist around $4,000 or more, the business you receive due to their art would have brought in $10,000+ in sales over the next four or more months.

  • You are tired of using Venmo and Instagram to process orders and track customers, so you hire a designer to make a website for your customers to shop with you. It might cost you around $2,500 for a shop with a handful more pages to be designed, but once you have the website in place and you start marketing, you realize that you not only have more time but orders are coming in and they’re adding up to $1,000 per month (with some regular marketing, those sales might even increase!).

  • You’re growing tired of managing your social media content so you hire a manager and it costs you about $3,000 or more a month. Doing so results in the growth of your account and increasing your sales on your website. Within three months you’re making 4x as much in sales as you used to make and your following increases 30% every month.

So, as you can see, while the initial cost of working with a creative might feel “steep,” the value and impact of their work for your business pays for itself.

Keep in mind: the creative’s work cannot function alone.

In order for people to experience the mural at the store mentioned above, the business owner needs to make sure they publicize the mural’s existence and leave it as an open space for selfies during business hours. In order for the Instagram business owner to make sales on their new website, they need to continue marketing on Instagram and encourage their customers to checkout on their website. In order for the business owner using a social media manager to skyrocket their account and sales, they need to provide feedback, assets, and direction to the manager for the brand and its product releases.
