Let Your WHY Guide Your Business Strategy in 2023

When you started your business, you had a vision.

You decided that your business would allow you to do certain things, have a particular lifestyle, enjoy favorite hobbies or treats, and experience life your way.

With 2023 barely opening its pages up to you, now is the perfect time to revisit your business strategy and let your WHY guide you. Look at your business strategy* and begin to look at changes you can make to your structure and workflow that allow you to get closer to your WHY.

Note: Theresa and I did this in 2022 by implementing a word of the year that gave us room to explore what we were doing and how it would support our WHY. Our word of the year in 2022 was “Redefine.” Will you be trying a word of the year in 2023?

An example of adjusting your business strategy can look like setting a working time frame. If your WHY included having more time for yourself or family, then applying a work schedule would help you arrange your time on your terms. For some people it might look like working in the evenings so that their day is open and free for life. For others it might look like working 4 hour days and they get to decide where those four hours fit in.

Don’t try to change everything all at once.

To make the most of this effort we recommend doing the following:

  1. Sit down and list your ideal lifestyle from having a successful business.

  2. Rearrange the components in your list based upon perceived priority/importance.

  3. Start with your highest ranking component and schedule in a 20 minute planning meeting for yourself (otherwise known as a time blocking) to create a plan

  4. Use your planning meeting to determine the best way to adjust your business strategy so that you can attain or close a gap in reaching your ideal lifestyle component.

  5. Repeat the process as you have time, remember, it’s not a race!

Managing a business and making it work for you will take time. Trust your intuition and your goal. Sometimes the gap you’ll close is only slight, but the Chat with us in the comments! What is the first ideal lifestyle component you’ll be tackling this year?

*Business strategy: A plan to bring forth one’s vision for a company that guides the where, how, and what of the business. A business strategy incorporates business financial practices, communication expectations, operating policies, and marketing plans.
