Create a Workspace That Works for You

It’s no secret that your environment directly impacts your mood and, therefore, your productivity. Having a workspace that is both functional and uplifting-a space that you actually want to inhabit-can drastically improve your work! Whether you work from home or in an office, there are plenty of ways to level-up your workspace and make working hours both more appealing and more efficient.

Happy Monday! One thing that working from home has taught me about myself is that I struggle with organization (not sure why I was shocked by this discovery _). My workspace generally consists of a growing collecti.jpg
  • Stay organized and tidy, but make sure that everything you could possibly need while working is readily available and within arms’ reach! Keep your desk and immediate work area minimal and uncluttered, trying to only keep around the tools that you use regularly, and then make sure those tools have an appealing, easily accessible place of belonging!

  • If possible, dedicate the space to work only, rather than using it as a multi-purpose area. This will signal to your subconscious that, when in that space, it is time to switch into work mode and not focus on anything else. If it is not feasible for you to designate your space solely as a work area, find ways to transform the space for when it’s time to work! Clear off the table of anything but your work, light a specific candle, turn off the TV--anything to elevate that space during working hours.

  • That leads us into our next tip: avoid distractions! As mentioned, turn off the TV or anything that will draw your focus away from your work. Switch your phone to silent or airplane mode and try leaving it in a different room, only allowing yourself to touch it on breaks. To make this easier and also increase your efficiency, you could try blocking your time. Set a timer for however long you want (ideally thirty minutes to an hour) and work straight through that time. When the timer goes off, give yourself a break and regroup to get clear on what you need to accomplish in your next block of work time.

  • On the flip side of distractions to avoid in your workspace, be sure to fill your space with things that will enhance your productivity. Some people need background music while others prefer complete silence. Create the perfect workspace ambiance with candles (I have a candle that smells like coffee that helps zing my senses into focus), comfortable and ergonomic chair/desk situations, and keeping the temperature at a comfortable level.

  • Lighting is essential! Making sure your workspace is well lit is key to productivity. I personally respond a lot better to and feel so much more energized in natural light as opposed to fluorescents, but I’m also occasionally more successful with creative writing in a dim, candlelit setting. Figure out what your most productive vibe is!

  • Lastly, fill your work space with inspiration. Photos, quotes, favorite trinkets or evidence of past successes. Create a mood or vision board. Create a display that both reminds you of your goals and your purpose, and encourages you to reach for them!

We’d love to see your workspace set up! If you’ve created a space that you love, a space that helps you function at your highest capacity, take a photo and tag us @raineandroseco on Instagram!
