How Your Brand Words Translate to Personality and Voice

So, you’ve defined your brand personality and now need to ensure that the way that you are communicating reflects a brand voice that supports that personality. It can be easy to speak to your customers exactly how you speak IRL, or to go the other way and use wording that is overtly professional. But how do you get into the flow of using words that translate authentically for your unique and specific brand personality?

Three questions to keep in mind:

  1. If your brand’s personality were a friend, how would you speak to them?

  2. How do you want your customer to perceive your brand? What reaction or emotion do you want to evoke?

  3. What sort of connection do you want to develop with your customers? Do you want to evoke a feeling of speaking 1:1 with each customer or do you have more of a team/community mentality?

Communicating with your audience should feel natural and authentic. So accumulating a list of words or phrases that you love and use regularly is a good place to start. Next, based on your answers to the above questions, curate a bank of adjectives that describe your brand’s communication style. Utilizing this bank of words will also serve to keep you on track and place you in the mindset when you sit down to write copy.

Examples: romantic, intimate, uplifting, authoritative, casual, friendly, polished, intellectual, etc.

Be intentional and specific with your wording! Try to avoid using generic, broad phrases that shoppers see everywhere. Use your brand messaging to hone in on your brand’s unique and intentional abilities to improve your customers’ lives! And, most importantly, be consistent in how you are communicating with your customers. You want your brand to be a staple that they can trust and come to know what to expect!
